FR-44 vs SR-22: same paperwork, very different price

FR-44 and SR-22 are both certificates of financial responsibility, but they certify different limits and apply to different offenses. A clear comparison table.

You do not choose — the state does

The letter from the FLHSMV or the Virginia DMV names the certificate. If it says FR-44, an SR-22 will be rejected. If it says SR-22, an FR-44 is unnecessary spending and does not clear the record any faster.

When the notice is ambiguous, call the state before buying. A five-minute call is cheaper than two filings.

Common misdiagnosis: drivers assume any DUI-adjacent suspension means FR-44. In Florida, a non-DUI suspension can require an SR-22. In Virginia, driving uninsured requires an SR-22. The offense, not the inconvenience, decides.

Why the FR-44 premium is higher

An FR-44 forces you to buy limits several times the state minimum. In Florida, 100/300/50 is roughly ten times the ordinary property damage requirement. That coverage costs money regardless of your record; the DUI rating adds on top.

For a rough planning number, expect an FR-44 policy to cost 30 to 50 percent more than an SR-22 policy for the same driver — and both to cost more than a standard policy.

Moving between states

If you move from an SR-22 state to Florida or Virginia mid-requirement, the new state applies its own rules. Do not assume your existing certificate transfers. Conversely, leaving Florida or Virginia does not cancel the original requirement; the imposing state keeps it on file until the period ends.

In both directions, the safe sequence is: bind the new policy, get the new filing confirmed, then cancel the old policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is FR-44 the same as SR-22?

No. Both are certificates of financial responsibility filed by your insurer, but FR-44 certifies much higher liability limits and applies to DUI-related offenses in Florida and Virginia.

Which states use FR-44?

Florida and Virginia. Every other state uses the SR-22 or its equivalent.

Can I file an SR-22 instead of an FR-44?

No. The state specifies the certificate. An SR-22 will not satisfy an FR-44 requirement.

Does an FR-44 cost more than an SR-22?

Yes, typically 30 to 50 percent more, because the required limits are several times higher.
