FR-44 questions, answered plainly

Answers to the most common FR-44 questions: limits in Florida and Virginia, filing duration, non-owner policies, lapses, and what the certificate actually covers.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is an FR-44?

A certificate of financial responsibility that your insurance company files with the state to prove you carry liability coverage at high limits. It is required after DUI-related offenses in Florida and Virginia.

Is an FR-44 the same as SR-22?

No. The FR-44 certifies much higher limits. Florida requires 100/300/50; Virginia requires 100/200/50. An SR-22 certifies standard minimum limits and is used in most other states.

How long does an FR-44 stay on file?

Three continuous years in both states. The clock starts when your driving privilege is reinstated, not at conviction.

Can I file the certificate myself?

No. States require the insurer to transmit it electronically to prevent fraud.

Do I need a car to get an FR-44?

No. A non-owner policy at the required limits can support the filing.

What happens if I let the policy cancel?

The carrier files a termination notice, the state suspends your privilege again, and the three-year clock typically restarts.

Does the FR-44 pay for my own medical bills?

No. It certifies liability coverage for others. Medical payments coverage is optional and separate.

Will an FR-44 double my insurance forever?

No. The requirement ends after three continuous years. Your rate may improve gradually as the violation ages.

Can I switch insurance companies during the filing period?

Yes, but bind and file the new policy before cancelling the old one.

Does moving out of state cancel the requirement?

No. The state that imposed it keeps the requirement until the period ends.

What does an FR-44 cost?

The filing fee is roughly $15 to $50. Premiums for non-owner policies typically run $110 to $220 a month; owner policies run higher.

How fast does the filing go through?

Usually 24 to 48 hours after the policy is paid and active.
